Within this new episode of the Design Break podcast, I talk about one of the most powerful things that any creative can experience, conferences. They have the potential to push your careers to new heights and increase your creative curiosity.
When ever designers or other creatives come to me and ask me what could potentially benefit them or help them boost their chances of landing a job, I always suggest going and attending to a conference like Creative South, Circles Conference or any other of the many amazing conferences.
You will meet many amazing people who will share their stories with you and you with them. One of the most important parts of any conference isn’t just the event itself but the people.
Nuggets of Wisdom:
- Break Out of Your Shell - Speaking as someone with severe social anxiety, one thing that I would implore all of you to do is to break out of your shell and talk to people, socialize and have fun. That goes for more than just conferences, use that for other events and meetups as well.
- Expose Yourself to New Ideas - Don’t close yourself off to new ways of thinking, creative techniques and most importantly improvements on process. Learn from others, mistakes and wins all the same.
- Make Meaningful & Lasting Connections - One of the best things to ever come out of my experiences at conferences has been the amazing friendships that I’ve walked away with. Some of these friendships have helped me land jobs and others have helped me through some rough times. You never know who you may meet and who may end up being a very great friend or…boss?
- Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions - Something that I have never been shy about doing when going to conferences is asking questions. The very first conferences I went to, I went up to almost every speaker and asked them at least one question. It has helped helped me over the years develop my skills, strategy and creative confidence.
